The year was 1993 and Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) went platinum.  As a response to their fame, bootleg "W" shirts were circulating at local swap meets and print shops.  In their response, Wu-Tang debuted "Wu Wear", an urban lifestyle brand that sold mostly in part to Wu-Tang's popularity.

If you really want to dig deeper, you can accredit Wu-Wear for opening the gates for most brands such as G-Unit, Sean John, Rocawear, and so forth.  We can all share our gripes about the present image of these brands, but realistically, how many of us donned these brands as youth?  In fact, let's not forget how heavily marketed Tommy Hilfiger and Polo was to the hip hop community through Wu-Tang.  However, we can save that for another post.
